A recipe for incorporating vegetables into the diet includes boiling up vegetables, carrot tops, potato peelings, almost anything as long as it can be made to go ‘mushy’, then straining and mixing the vegetables with layers mash, which will serve to dry the vegetables off.

There are lots of recipes, most of which are fine in moderation so long as you don’t expect to save corn ration and you don’t boil up mashes with salt. Hens are very susceptible to salt, much more than we are. For this reason it is not a good idea to feed them products prepared for human consumption and certainly titbits like crisps and chocolate are definitely out of the question.
